Make The Dragon Smile

So many days I've had that I've counted
Seems my demise I ain't yet confronted
As I notice a trace of remorse
I recall I had no recourse

It's time I found a reason to go on
By now I've walked a mile
And how this is really all I need
I want to make the dragon smile

Each morning somehow we awaken
What has yesterday taken
We live we die we learn how to survive
We keep on smilin and we'll keep on asking why

By no I've found a reason to go on
By now I've walked a mike
And how this is really all I need
I wan't to make that dragon smile

Dragon Smile was an important song for me. I had been playing mostly bass in punk and pop bands. I was not in a great place musically. Then I saw a Grateful Dead show and became a huge Jerry Garcia fan. I bought an acoustic guitar and started to play covers and also write on the instrument. The chord changes to Dragon Smile are directly influenced by such Dead songs as Althea and Scarlet Begonias.

I was in a convenience store and up at the counter there was a little box of toys, including a rubber finger puppet monster. I though he looked like a dragon. So I took him home and painted his portrait (which became the cover of the CD). I wasn't happy with the painting until be chance I turned up the corners of his mouth to make him smile. And then I liked the painting. So to me that is the metaphor. The key to happiness is to make the dragon smile.
